No appointment is required, but make sure to arrive during office hours.

PRO TIP: Do not show up on a closed holiday!

  1. Bring Valid Photo ID
Both you and your partner must appear in person to apply. Bring a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport. You don’t need to be a Tennessee resident to apply, and no blood tests or waiting periods are required.
  2. Pay the License Fee
The marriage license costs approximately$97in Johnson County. However, if you complete a certified premarital counseling course, you can save $60 and pay just $37. If you go this route, don’t forget to bring your official certificate of completion to the Clerk’s Office.
  3. No Waiting Period — Use It Immediately
Unlike some states, Tennessee does not have a waiting period. Once you receive your license, it is valid immediately and good for 30 days. That gives you flexibility in planning — you can pick it up the day before your wedding or several days in advance. Check the hours or operation for the clerks office to ensure you do not miss out on being able to pick up your license.
  4. Make Sure Your Officiant Is Legal
Tennessee requires a licensed officiant to perform your ceremony. Ministers, priests, judges, or even ordained friends or family members can officiate, but they must meet the state’s requirements. After the ceremony, your officiant will sign the license and return it to the County Clerk to make everything official.

Tips for a Smooth Wedding Day

  • Check Clerk Office Hours in Advance: Especially if you’re arriving in Trade close to your wedding day, confirm that the office is open when you need it.
  • Bring Backup Documents: A backup form of ID (like a passport) is always good to have, just in case.
  • Keep the License Safe: Once issued, keep it in a secure place until your ceremony. Lock it in a safe, but remember to bring it with you to the venue on wedding day!
